• Convivia in action
The convivium of Ljubljana, Slovenia, celebrates its first 10
years
On January 25, the Ljubljana convivium celebrated its first 10
years with a theme dinner inspired by the principles of Good,
Clean and Fair. Thanks to the active help of enthusiastic
members, convivium leader, Matjaz Zupan, has been able to
organize many interesting initiatives over the years: theme
dinners, meetings of Slovenian convivia, visits to producers in
Italy and Slovenia, Taste Workshops, day bike trips a to
discover local producers, and many more. Since there are a
number of organizations in the country working to support
producers, the convivium has decided to focus on increasing
consumer awareness.
Terra Madre
Benjamin and Alfredo
Californian delegate Benjamin Fahrer and Umbrian farmer Alfredo
Fasola have maintained valuable contact since they met at Terra
Madre 2006. They got on so well that Benjamin decided to
organize an exchange between Californian and Umbrian farmers for
2008.
On January 21, 12 farmers from Umbria flew to San Francisco to
attend the Eco-Farm Conference and take a five-day trip to visit
producers and learn about agricultural techniques, Californian
culture and food specialties. In return for the hospitality, the
Umbrian farmers have organized among themselves and with local
institutions to welcome to their homes a delegation of farmers
and cooks from California. Immediately after the Terra Madre
2008 meeting they will be able to visit the region of Italy with
the longest experience of organic agriculture.
A great example of the spirit of collaboration inspiring the
Terra Madre network!

Our friends in Kenya
In recent
days the dramatic situation in Kenya has been of great
concern, with the political crisis rapidly turning into
a humanitarian emergency. The Terra Madre network and
Convivia showed they could quickly respond and take
action. It was particularly useful to be able to get
proper information: "Western media are showing the
entire country in flames" says the new Slow Food
International Vice President John Karouki after
contacting Samuel Muhunyu, leader of the Kenyan Central
Rift convivium, "but fortunately incidents have only
occurred in some regions and the situation is slowly
stabilizing. Nevertheless refugees urgently need aid and
with the help of the Terra Madre network, Slow Food
Kenya is organizing help".
With the
support of various humanitarian organizations, the
network is moving to help about a thousand refugee
families. The aid consists of basic necessities such as
food, clothing, medicines and educational materials for
local schools. These communities are currently facing an
extreme crisis as the looters burned crops ready for
harvesting and set barns on fire. Many farmers and
herders have been forced to leave their land, they have
lost their houses and have had to take refuge in
religious institutes, schools or even escape to
neighboring countries such as Uganda. Looting, fires and
destruction were concentrated in the regions of Rift
Valley, Coast Province, Nyanza Province, Western
Province, North Eastern Province and Nairobi, causing
500 deaths and 100,000 refugees. Various Terra Madre
food communities are located in these areas, such as the
Nakuru pea and potato growers, the Molo and Makueni seed
savers and the Rift Valley growers.
It goes without
saying that any Convivium in the world wanting to make a
contribution can contact us at:

The
International Congress enabled Slow Food to renew itself
in the light of its history and developments over the
last four years. The principles of "Good, Clean and
Fair" and Terra Madre have redrawn and extended the
borders of our world. Our desire to see the universe of
food as a network of interacting diversity is taking on
new forms. We are at an important transformation point
where everyone in the movement is called to help ensure
that Slow Food is fully understood outside our
organization and that all its many facets of food
culture are accepted within, each making their
contribution.
I felt it
was important to begin the newsletter with this news,
because it shows the potential of our Slow Food/Terra
Madre network and what can grow within it. This applies
not only for happy festive occasions, the exchange of
information and knowledge, but also for emergency action
in crisis situations. Our network has an incredible
potential: we have the responsibility to use it whenever
possible, keeping it alive and active.

Terra
Madre under the Tuscan cypresses
On Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 January 2008, Chianciano Terme
(Province of Siena) hosted the first meeting of the Tuscan Terra
Madre Parliament. The meeting brought together all the parties
with a shared involvement in Slow Food's work (Presidia and food
community producers, convivia members and local bodies), calling
them to discuss a draft document setting out principles,
objectives and ways of implementing the network, in preparation
for the world meeting of Terra Madre, to be held in Turin next
October.
Following the first edition of Terra Madre Tuscany 2006 - The
Right Taste (October-November 2006), Slow Food Tuscany, the Slow
Food Foundation for Biodiversity, the Region of Tuscany and the
NGO UCODEP have continued working to build the Tuscan Terra
Madre network. The Chianciano meeting marks another step in
creating an international "alliance" to foster exchanges and
cooperation based on the principles of product excellence,
environmental cleanliness and social justice.
Events for Learning, Meeting and Tasting
Biofach 2008
Biofach, the world's largest fair for organic products, is
returning to Nuremberg (Germany). From February 21 to 24,
visitors from around the world will be greeted by a rich array
of products for supermarkets, specialist natural food shops,
markets and select restaurants and hotels.
Slow Food Deutschland, represented by the Nuremberg convivium,
will attend with a small stand and there will be a talk by
Hellmut Stöhr, the Tübingen convivium leader. The presence of
Slow Food is possible thanks to the coordination of Walter
Kress, producer, International Counselor and ex-member of the
Slow Food Germany board and of Bernward Geier, for a long time
Director of International Relations with IFOAM (International
Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements) and a committed
Slow Food activist.
Carlo Petrini at Berlinale 2008
The celebrated Berlin International Film Festival, the Berlinale,
will this year be held from February 7 to 17. The president and
founder of Slow Food International, Carlo Petrini, will speak
during the special program dedicated to culinary cinema (Kulinarisches
Kino), scheduled from February 11 to 15.
The food program will open with a screening of the classic
The
Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie by Luis
Buñuel. It is a surreal satire on bourgeois food habits and will
prompt a discussion between Carlo Petrini and Ferran Adrià, the
legendary chef of the restaurant El Bulli. The topic for the
meeting is
The Future of Food
and it will be moderated by Giovanni di Lorenzo, chief editor of
the German newspaper Die Zeit.
Don Pasta wins over the French public
Salentine artist Daniele De Michele, alias Don Pasta, received a
warm reception on January 10 and 11 in Toulouse from an audience
happy to abandon themselves to his rich blend of music and
flavors. Slow Food France presented Food Sound System, a show
whose multimedia performance of interwoven music, video and
spoken word on a theme of food and cuisine prompts reflections
on sustainable models of food production. Images of dishes
confidently prepared by Don Pasta appear on the screen
accompanied by the Fama Volat trio and the artist's words,
guiding the audience in a richly evocative experience.
The show was preceded each evening by a discussion. On the first
day Raphaël Paya and Jean Lhéritier, director and president of
Slow Food France, presented a project for defending food
biodiversity and on the next day, the Toulouse convivium leader,
François Dedieu, spoke on the topic
The Future of Wine, between
Dionysius and Tekhne. With the lively
participation of Slow Food members and the Bigorre Black Pig
Presidium, proceedings culminated in a convivial tasting
session.
A Taste of Slow
The third edition of Australia's largest Slow Food event brings
together two weeks of tantalizing food and wine events held
across Victoria and a national Slow Food showcase in central
Melbourne from February 22 to 24.
A Taste of Slow 2008 will bring together food, ethics, ecology,
music and art to infuse the question of how we eat with new
creativity and passion. The program features international
speakers, producers from across Australia, biodynamic wine
tastings, Slow Food cooking demonstrations and plenty of
convivial discussion and debate about the pleasures of the
table. The event will also host the
Slow Shorts
film festival over the same weekend, a competition presenting
the best short films from Australia and around the world
inspired by Slow Food philosophy.
