Riccardo
Sauvaigne

Ark
Petrini
Terra Madre
Palazzo
Terra Madre 2006
Terra
Terra
Salone
www.terramadre2006.org
2006的Terra
Terra
Madre。

The projects
The Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity supports Terra Madre food
communities directly. One of its main activities is creating new
Presidia to protect and promote the provide producers with
organizational support.
The network
The event is just the start in creating a world network of food
communities. By providing tools for communication (the press, internet,
TV, radio or another medium), small-scale producers can exchange
experiences, discuss common problems and work together to educate the
public.

The food
communities
Slow Food is an international association that works to protect
biodiversity.
With the Ark of Taste, created in 1996, the organization
catalogues endangered food products all over the word to raise public
consciousness of their cultural and agricultural significance.
With the Presidia project, begun in 1999, Slow Food actively
assists and promotes producers and their product. The experience gained
from these projects has created the new concept of ‘food community’.

A food
community is a physically identifiable entity that holds values,
interests and common purposes and which is engaged in seed saving,
harvesting, breeding, animal husbandry, farming, fishing, food
processing, food distribution, marketing, education and other
eco-gastronomic activities, in order to bring small-scale, quality food
products to consumers.” Good, Clean and Fair, Carlo Petrini.

The idea
of Terra Madre arose from the need to bring together people who work for
sustainable, quality foods that respect the environment and other
people.

The first
edition
The first edition of Terra Madre took place October 20-23, 2004, in the
Palazzo del Lavoro in Turin. 4,888 delegates representing 1,250 food
communities from 130 countries convened at the event, including farmers,
breeders, fishermen, processors, distributors, cooks and agricultural
experts.

Terra Madre 2006
The second edition of Terra Madre will take place in Turin October
26-30, 2006. It will be organized in partnership with the Ministry for
Forestry and Agricultural Policy, the Italian Cooperation for
Development of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Piedmont Regional
Authority and the City of Turin. |
|
| |
Terra Madre 2006 will coincide with Slow Food’s Salone del Gusto, the
foremost international quality food event. |
|
| |
1,500 food communities, 1,000
cooks and 200 universities from all over the world will meet in Turin,
representing the three elements that make up the world of food: the
traditional and practical knowledge of producers, the experience and
creativity of cooks and the insight of science and research. |
|
|
|
There will be plenary
sessions, Earth Workshops (roundtables and panel discussions dedicated
to problems that producers encounter every day), conferences on larger
themes (such as GMOs, sustainable fishing, biodynamic practices, short
production chains), informal meetings between representatives of the
same country or region and Taste Workshops organized for producers.
|
|
| |
the cooks
The 2006 edition will reinforce relationships between food communities
and the quality restaurant sector. The world of sustainable food hinges
upon the food communities, but cooks are the fundamental link between
production and consumption of excellent local products.
|
|
| |
The universities
Researchers and scholars from universities worldwide will be present at
Terra Madre 2006. Slow Food is creating a network connecting
institutions that are involved in defending biodiversity and sustainable
food production.
|
|
| |
Organizing the
event
Delegates will stay in the regions of Piedmont, Liquria and Valle
d’Aosta. Host towns will work together to cover travel costs and to
organize hospitality for delegates from developing countries. Convivia,
restaurants and Slow Food members and enthusiasts all over the world are
fundraising to help make this event possible.
Link the first edition, in 2006 the contribution of Coldiretti (Italy’s
most important farmers’ association) will be instrumental: Piedmont
members will host more than a thousand delegates on their farms and in
their homes. |
